"To handle the compensations of the 228 Incident, implement historical education, clarify the attribution of relevant responsible parties, allow the people to learn the truth behind the incident, heal the damage from history, and promote ethnic harmony," the Government has adhered to the spirit of legislation, implemented the common expectations of the victims from the 228 Incident regarding the establishment of a national 228 Memorial Museum based on the “Regulations on the Handling and Compensation of the 228 Incident” (hereinafter referred to as the "Regulations"). After over 5 years of hard work by the victims and families of the 228 Incident along with relevant foundations, the Executive Yuan finally issued instructions in July 2006 to have the "National 228 Memorial Museum's" address set at No.54 Nanhai Road, Taipei City (formerly known as the Taiwan Education Association). The "National 228 Memorial Museum" was officially registered on February 28th, 1996. During this time, the museum has undergone restorations and re-use projects on its monuments, and the "National 228 Memorial Museum" was officially opened on February 28th, 2011.
